Scott Martin, mentioned in the previous blog posting, brought to the BGS board members attention this morning that BGS was “almost” mentioned in a Birmingham News story in Sunday’s newspaper (3/25/2007).
In the February BGS newletter sent to BGS members, it was mentioned that a classified ad had been running in the Birmingham News regarding the “found” tombstone of Thomas J. Tyson, a WWII veteran. BGS was referenced in the article as a “Birmingham genealogical group.”
Delilah Evans, a BGS member, was inspired to do something. The newspaper article details her search. Delilah located Mr. Tyson’s obituary and with that the tombstone’s original home – Greenwood Cemetery. Unfortunately there is not a cemetery survey available to return the tombstone to its proper location nor could any family members be located. Delilah even went as far as contacting Mr. Tyson’s church at the time of his death. According to the article, Delilah isn’t giving up yet – and those of us who “know” her on the various rootsweb lists know that will be the case.
