While “checking in” today to see if the Birmingham Public Library had added new names to its obituary database, I noticed that they had added a NEW database. They have added a searchable index the records organized and prepared as part of the Jefferson County Loose Records project. (Read more about the project here.)
This database contains almost 40,000 names of individuals from 1852-1936 found in a variety of records (actually the # of names might be much more if you count those referenced as a secondary name in the record). You can search the database here by clicking on “Jefferson County Probate Court, Loose Records (1852-1936).”
All of these records have been filmed by the GSU and are available at the Alabama Archives in Montgomery, the LDS Library in Salt Lake, and can be requested to a local Family History Center, if you are unable to visit the Jefferson County Courthouse (downtown) to view the microfilm.
Good luck and happy searching!
