BGS’ Oldest Member Celebrates 100th Birthday

Mary Cochran, long time member and supporter of BGS, turned 100 last weekend. Many relatives and friends helped Mary celebrate the big day. Locally, she is known as the “Historian of Pinson”.

The front page of the Friday edition of “The Pinson News” carried her photo and an article about her birthday celebration. The article indicates that photos and video from the party with later be placed on the website in the “PinsonTV” section.

BGS celebrates 50th Anniversary

The Birmingham Genealogical Society was organized on March 15, 1959. It was organized exclusively for educational and research purposes, and to foster preservation of genealogical and historical material.

This year we celebrate our 50th anniversary. The celebration will take place on March 21, 2009 at the Birmingham Public Library, Linn-Henley Building . All members and friends are invited to help us celebrate this occasion at 1:00 pm in the Arrington Auditorium on the third floor. Refreshments will be served.

Please mark your calendars now and join us March 21st.

Shelby County Reporter Added to BPL Obituary Indexing Project

Okay, this one will be brief. I checked today to see if BPL had updated the obituary indexes lately (they have been back to January 1939 for several weeks) and I saw that they had added a NEW newspaper to the indexing project.

Shelby County Reporter
* Current coverage
* January 1938 – December 1938
* 82 entries

The Shelby County Reporter was published in Columbiana, Shelby County, Alabama. This a much welcome addition to the project.

You can search the index at:

BPL Obituary Index

Also don’t forget that BGS’s 50th birthday is in March!  We will celebrate with friends new and old on March 21st.  More information is to come!
