Dr. Tom Caldwell
Dr. Tom Caldwell

It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of the passing of Dr. Tom Caldwell and his daughter, Cathryn Caldwell, on October 20th.  Dr. Tom was “one in a million”.  A shining star in our midst that cannot be easily replaced.  Dr. Tom was a long-time member of BGS, serving as Curator for the past several years.

Dr. Tom will be missed by all.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.

In Memoriam, Mildred Thomas Kent

When I became a member of the Birmingham Genealogical Society (BGS) a few years ago, one of the first people I met was current BGS President, Mildred Kent. Mildred always made it a point to speak to me each meeting. This I appreciated because I really did not know anyone in the Society at that time. I am sure others could tell the same story. She has been a long standing and active member of BGS as well as the Alabama Genealogical Society and many other historical and genealogical organizations. Today it is my sad duty to report to you all that Mildred Thomas Kent passed away on Thursday, June 5, 2008.

Her obituary can be viewed here. Please take a moment and sign the guestbook as well. I can say without pause, Mildred will be missed by all who knew her.

Rest In Peace, Dear Friend

Bettina

When I became a member of the BGS Board a few years ago, I was made to feel welcome by all. But there was one lady who went out of her way to make me feel “included”. Today it is my sad duty to report to you all that Bettina Pearson Higdon Burns passed away on Thursday, February 14th. I have to admit I am a bit teary eyed as I write this post… you see Bettina was one of those almost larger than life figures… she had tons of energy and drive at 87… putting those of us younger than her to shame. Just this past October, she won 3rd place in the BGS October Fair… click here to see her photo and memorable quotes from that day.

Her obituary can be viewed here. Please take a moment and sign the guestbook as well. I can say without pause, Bettina will be missed by all who knew her.
