Beyond the Basics of Genealogy
Workshop Series at the Birmingham Public Library

Beyond the Basics of Genealogy (BtB) workshops, a series of classes
covering various topics on genealogical research will be conducted in the
Birmingham Public Library (BPL) beginning in April 2013. Workshops will
run from one to two hours, and be conducted by members of the Southern
History Department staff.

Participants will gain in-depth knowledge on specialized areas of
researching genealogy. The BtB classes are designed to expand on
information provided in the “Introduction to Genealogy” classes, which are
offered throughout the year by the Southern History Department.
Registration is limited to the first 18 respondents. Classes will be held
at 10:00 a.m. in the Board Room of the Central Library.

The subjects being taught and dates are as follows:
• What’s Up Doc?: Government Documents in Genealogical Research –
Saturday, April 13th

• The Bases Are Loaded: BPL’s Catalog, Worldcat, and Other Databases –
Saturday, May 18th

• Loving the LDS: An In-Depth Guide to Using Familysearch.org – Saturday,
June 15th

• Getting the Good Dirt: Using Land Records in Genealogical Research –
Saturday, July 27th

• Bring Out Your Dead: Cemeteries in Genealogical Research – Saturday,
August 17th

Registration for the workshop costs $5.00, which includes the class
handout. To register, contact the Southern History Department of the

Program Topic: Shopping in Yesteryear Birmingham

Mr. Hollis is a historian and curator of all things Birmingham. He is the curator of the Birmingham Rewound website and has written several books about the Magic City’s past, from its old movie theaters to its vintage advertising signs. His latest Birmingham history book is entitled “Lovemans: Meet Me Under The Clock.”

Speaker:  Joe Holley,  Industrial League Baseball enthusiast and historian

Program Topic: Baseball and Steel:  Industrial League Baseball

Joe Holley is a native of Walker County and retired after a lengthy career with the Alabama Department of Transportation. While in college, Mr. Holley took a history course on techniques of research including conducting oral histories.  Because of longtime family involvement, he chose local industrial league baseball as the subject of his research project.  He initially interviewed old timers who dated back to the turn of the 20th Century.  In the intervening years, he has continued his research and has become an “expert”  on the local industrial league teams and players.

AGS Starts Blog for Sharing Inquires & Personal Experiences about the April 27th tornadoes

The Alabama Genealogical Society (AGS) has started a blog for sharing inquiries and personal experiences about the April 27th tornadoes.

In a letter to the members:

As most of you know Alabama was raked by numerous deadly tornados yesterday leaving an historic amount of damage, displacement and loss of communications and power to many in our state. Some of your friends and families may have been affected. Several of us at AGS have had inquiries about our members, or information that some wish us to get out to others.

In an effort to do that we have set up a blog for sharing inquiries and personal experiences with each other. The blog is temporary and will remain up only as long as there is a use for it. And, since we are new at blogging, it may undergo changes as we assess it’s operation.
